Blast from the Past #103: TMNT color series #2 cover pencils

Here's aother of my penciled covers from the Mirage color TMNT series, also known as "Volume 2".

This was one of a series of Vol. 2 covers I did wherein I incorporated a large, looming background head or face image with a foreground action scene -- in this case, the head in question is the menacing cranium of the Baxter Stockman robot. -- PL

  1. NOT that it has anything to do with this picture, but it does remind me of the episode in 2k3 where the guys hotwire an alien car in order to chase after the Triceratons who have captured Prof. Honeycut...

IS he going to be in the current series? IS this the last toon series we're going to see? IS Mirage over for real as certain people have pronounced?

Comic/wise== WILL Mike make it home? Will Raph remain mutated forever? Will Don ever get larger? Will Leo suddenly wake up and realize that it's all been a dream like Vol. 2?

Will Murphy ever post something regarding TMNT? Will you address the 25th anniversary?

Will you guys show up at SDCC?

Will Ninja Turtles last for a few more years?

    Depressedly yours,

    Cynthia

  2. -->> ..guess it'd be safe to say Baxter is one of the main TMNT villains of a thousand faces ?!

The Volume 2 version is prolly, visually the most disturbing robot ( least to me ).

Maybe i'm not geek enough .. but what inspired it ??

He's kinda like an old RPG MECH like something out of an old Palladium book, ..but also kinda like Robbie the Robot from an old sci-fi 1950s space movie.

    i dunno.

The lack of facial features ( aside from the freeky implied face features with all those camera eyes and things ) ..and his mass, needle fingers, fire power and just the way he handles April like a rag-doll..

    really creepy !!

Oi - - just a damm war machine, this version.

  4. i would not let one persons opinion sway you too much splinters iroonna. only one person has pronounced it dead and that is only because it is apparently dead to them.

  5. Agreed on Baxter. He wasn't given too much to do in the comics except for Issue 2 and Volume 2....

But the new toon has made me a big fan of his character.

I do have a Stockman question, though. In regards to the original toon. Was there any ideas to tie up the Stockman plot line and turn him from fly to human? Baxter originally started out as a Good guy, until getting mixed up with the Shredder and Turtles drove him insane :).

I believe that the Fugitoid will NOT be making an appearance in this "Back to the Sewer" season. In all honesty, I don't recall how we left him the last time he appeared -- I have a vague memory of his getting some new kind of body.

" IS this the last toon series we're going to see?"

I don't know for sure, but I doubt it.

" IS Mirage over for real as certain people have pronounced?"

I'm not sure what that means, exactly, but I will say that "certain people" have proven themselvs to be spectacularly clueless in the past.

"Comic/wise== WILL Mike make it home? Will Raph remain mutated forever? Will Don ever get larger? Will Leo suddenly wake up and realize that it's all been a dream like Vol. 2?"

    Maybe, maybe, maybe, and no.

"Will Murphy ever post something regarding TMNT?"

    You'll have to ask him.

" Will you address the 25th anniversary?"

    Could you be more specific?

"Will you guys show up at SDCC?"

I'm sure some of the guys will go to SDCC, but I doubt that I will be one of them.

"Will Ninja Turtles last for a few more years?"

I don't know. I hope so. There are many things that could happen. Have patience. There are cycles to all things. -- PL

Neil, I'm afraid I have no idea. I lost interest in the old show after a few years when it became clear that Kevin and I were not being listened to by the producers, and my involvement with it diminished to almost nothing. -- PL

    C'mon Pete! I'm going! You'd love it!

Stockman fans should keep an eye out for something very cool happening in Tales next year too ;)

  10. Aww man...
I really felt sorry for Baxter in the last episode he was ever in. so close to being human again, all he ever wanted, and boom, banished forever into another dimension ;).

Baxter had some of the best one liners ever :)

  11. Thanks, PL, for answering me.

Regarding the 25th anniversary-- I guess I mean are we going to hear a few more spoilers/tidbits/anything about the coming year? It'd be cool if you could make it to San Diego, as I doubt that I shall win the lottery anytime soon so that I can actually attend an East Coast convention where you do show up.

And too bad about Honeycutt-- or Honeycut?-- I think he was still in the body that he and Leatherhead put together-- which reminds me of a HUGE plot hole from "Exodus" part 2 but I won't bring it up as I am pretty sure you are not a 2K3 geek like I am.

Anyway, thanks for taking the time to answer!

Cynthia, I have to admit I am not keeping track too closely of what is happening for the 25th anniversary, so therefore I can't really give out much information.

I have to say I am curious to know what this big plot hole in "Exodus" was. Although I may not be, as you put it, a "2K3 geek", I did work on every episode, and don't remember any such plot hole. Of course, that could be one of those "forest for the trees" situations. -- PL

    Okay-- you asked for it.

WHEN they got onboard Shredder's ship, Honeycutt was only available to the guys via Don's palmpilot or whatever his hand-held computer was-- right?? RIGHT????

BUT! When they were shown on the Utrom homeworld, after being rescued (including their taking "Honeycutt" to wherever, still in the hand-held thingie)-- HE appeared in his body that he and Leatherhead had made, NOT something better like his own original one!

HOW did he get there as not only a robot, but as a cobbled together by L.H. and Honeycutt robot to boot???

    HUH???

    :D:D:D

Well, to ME it was a huge plothole. As far as I could tell, Honeycutt was only there with them via the lil' computer thingie, NOT his Earth-robot body.

And THANKS for the chance to bring it up!

  14. -->> Cyn, real quick side note ::

..their are hints of the classic design in 4kids' HOBBLED robot body for Honeycutt.

  15. My guess is that the Utroms built him a new one. Although why they did the Earth design one over his original, who knows?

Cynthia,I went back to the original final draft of the script for that episode, and found this scene:

"**We PAN TO ANOTHER BULBOUS BALCONY as the LIGHTS FADE IN to show the Turtles and Splinter rising up through the floor, as well. All are bandaged: Splinter looking singed; Raphael bandaged heavily around the middle (broken ribs); Leo’s shoulder and arm heavily bandaged; Mikey’s legs in a cast. Don’s arm in a sling; Honeycutt now in a FUGITOID-ESQUE BODY."

Now, I haven't seen the episode in quite a while, so I don't remember exactly what the robot body looks like, but I believe the intention here was that the Utroms had supplied Honeycutt with some kind of Fugitoid-esque robot body into which he could download his consciousness from the handheld gizmo he was in at the time.

It's possible that there was a mix-up with model sheets or something. -- PL
